Fairbanks, Alaska in January

Friday, January 31, 2003

"The average temperature of -3.0 degrees F in Fairbanks was almost 7 degrees above normal for the month, despite a few days of well below normal temperatures in early January. A significant feature in the temperature pattern has been the persistence of warmth. Since September, the average temperature has been above normal and the September through January average ranks the warmest since 1906. The highest temperature for the month of 27 degrees F was reached on the 4th, while only 3 days later a low of -39 degrees F occurred on the 7th. Precipitation totaled 0.26 inches water equivalent, representing only 46% of normal. Snowfall totaled 6.9 inches, largely due to an event on the 4th that left Fairbanks with 4.3 inches of new snow. January ended with 9 inches of snow officially on the ground." Quoted from the Alaska Climate Research Center.
